1023. CahirTravelling predecessors of yours, Mr. and Mrs. Hall, wrote in Ireland - Its scenery and character: 'Cahir has a remarkably cheerful aspect and its prosperity is not alone upon the surface: it is derived principally from the extensive flour mills …conducted almost exclusively by people called Quakers. Cahir enjoys the advantage of an encouraging and considerate resident landlord, Lord Glengall, whose beautiful seat adjoins it'. In present-day Cahir the mills which are long established, scaled down now remain. A bakery, with its pyramid roof, and a range of modern industry flourish. 1025. Carrick On Suir10 km from Poulakerry brings one to the outskirts of the town having passed the Miloko milk products plant (1950) and the Deerpark area where the Davin brothers lived. Maurice was first president of the G.A.A. and its main draftsman of playing rules, an Irish and English champion in hammer throw and shot putt, and world-record-holder in the 56 lbs. throw with follow - a noted Suir oarsman too. Pat broke that record in the now obsolete event and earned immortality with a never-duplicated combination of world records in high jump and long jump, 1880-3. Kings of Ireland as well as Munster came to this spot and St Patrick is said to have preched here. King Cormac built his superb Royal Chapel in the 12th century and it is now one of the remarkable buildings to be seen on the Rock. Nearby were Cistercian, Dominican and Franciscan abbeys, two of which may still be viewed. Services in Cashel Guest Houses | Bed & Breakfasts | Hotels | Car Rental | Vacation Packages | |
