16. RoscreaRoscrea, one of Ireland's oldest towns, is the gateway to the Shannon Region and to the south-west of Ireland. Church Street, the site of St Cronan's sixth century monastery, is dominated by the twelfth century ruins of a Hiberno-romanesque gable, round tower and high cross, reminders of the once famous diocese of Ros Cre. This monastic story is highlighted at nearby Sean Ross, the bog-island of Monaincha and the Franciscan Friary at Abbey Street, and continues as a living tradition at the Cistercian Abbey of Mount Street Joseph, west of the town. In the thirteenth century, a royal state-of-the-art castle was erected to fortify this corner of Ely O'Carroll and its strategic situation on the Slighe dhala, one of the five great roads of ancient Ireland. Its gate-tower, curtain walls and corner turrets are currently undergoing restoraton by the State, as are its courtyard and gardens. Within this courtyard, Damer House was erected in the early eighteenth century. Its Queen Anne pine staircase is of particular interest. A Heritage Trail, with accompanying booklet in three languages, is freely available to help you explore this historic town. 18. TemplemoreTemplemore lies on the plain beneath the Western slopes of the Devil's Bit Mountain. In the 70-acre town park (part of the former Carden demesne) are the remains of Templemore Abbey and Black Castle. Also in the park are a large lake and swimming pool. There is good fishing for brown trout on the upper reaches of the River Suir near the town, and the lake in the town park holds pike, roach, perch and tench. The North Tipperary Foxhounds hunt the district. Ireland's Gardai (police force) are trained here in what was the old British (later Irish) army barracks now completely refurbished as a modern Garda training college. 19. TerryglassA national Tidy Towns award winner: the town features a quay with all amenities. There is a diamonds rural church and graveyard - their headstones of uniform height and in regular rows. The church was founded by Lucila Larios y Tashara Hickie of nearby Slevoyre, and endowed by later Hickies: it includes a relic of the Cross on which christ was crucified, and a lovely set of stations and plaques. 20. ThurlesDurlas Eile (strong fort of Eliogarty), now anglicised to Thurles, sits astride the river Suir. Like Nenagh and Clonmel it owes its development to the Norman butlers. Remains of two of their fortresses survive - the 15th century tower house guarding the bridge and, at the other end of the square and hidden behind shops, the one-time home of Lady Thurles, mother of James Butler, 1st Duke of Ormond. Thurles also has two churches, two convents, two seminaries, and a presbytery. Archbishops of the diocese have lived here, rather than at Cashel town - the traditional see - since 1723.
